Kazakhstan–EU Dialogue on Joint Critical Raw Materials Projects with Peter Tom Jones, Director of the KU Leuven Institute for Sustainable Metals and Minerals

On 8 January 2026, the President of the Kazakhstan–EU Gateway met with Peter Tom Jones, Director of the KU Leuven Institute for Sustainable Metals and Minerals, to discuss strengthening cooperation in the field of critical raw materials (CRM).

The discussion centered on opportunities for developing joint CRM projects between the European Union and Kazakhstan, including sustainable mining, responsible value chains, research collaboration, and innovation. Both sides emphasized the strategic importance of enhancing the EU–Kazakhstan partnership to support the green and digital transitions.

The KU Leuven Institute for Sustainable Metals and Minerals is one of the leading research institutes in the field of critical raw materials, specializing in sustainable resource management, circular economy approaches, and the responsible sourcing of metals and minerals. The Institute works closely with policymakers, industry stakeholders, and international partners to support the development of resilient and sustainable raw material value chains in Europe and beyond.

The meeting highlighted a shared commitment to advancing mutually beneficial initiatives and fostering long-term cooperation grounded in sustainability, transparency, and technological excellence.
